GTR is a well-known Rotary fundraising event that has been taking place since 1987 between the towns of Middelburg and eMalahleni, encouraging corporate, private and school teams along with individuals to compete for fun whilst doing their bit to support beneficiaries in our communities.
As we are currently in unchartered waters with the Covid-19 pandemic and there is no certainty what the future will hold for large events any time soon, the impact on the GTR 2020 event that was planned for the 22nd of August is great.
The GTR committee that comprises out of volunteers and Rotarians from Witbank and Middelburg respectively had the think hard about the next step. The options were to postpone the event, cancel the event for 2020 or to think out of the box and offer the GTR2020 race as a virtual run.
The committee did not think twice and opt to go with the virtual run as our beneficiaries depend on us now more than ever before, said Charles Deiner the GTR 2020 Committee Chairman.
Participants can run or cycle any route of their choice, which totals the distance entered for, in a single session on any day between the 1st and 22nd of August.
As the GTR is the largest charity event in Mpumalanga, that has been running for the last 33 years, the thought of not being able to help those in need was no option.
This gives an opportunity to invite people from other towns, even countries to get involved in the race.
